Hampta Pass Trek: Best time to Visit 2023

Hampta pass trekking

Hampta pass trek is situated at an elevation of 14,000 feet, Himachal Pradesh’s Hampta Pass trek is one of the Himalayas’ unique and impressive pass crosses. On one side of the path is the beautiful green valley of Kullu, with forests, meadows, and flowers bursting. On the other end is Lahaul’s almost barren, rugged landscape, with bare mountains and few florae.

The hampta pass treks have been popular for trekkers since they travel across magnificent terrains that vary in a few seconds. Every year, millions of travelers are attracted to Himachal by the direct contrast between its beautiful green valleys and barren mountainsides, dazzling blue river water, and snow-capped.

Hampta pass trek best time

The best time to visit the Hampta pass trek is from June to late October. The trek’s scenery changes considerably during the summer, spring, and early autumn seasons.

From June till mid-July, trekkers can prepare for a lot of snow, which also will cover the terrain from Balu ka Ghera onward. The meadow here is narrow and not exactly in the path of the sun’s rays.

From July to August, travelers can witness the monsoons on the trekking route. After the cross, the route enters the rain shadow area of the Pir Panjal mountain of the lower Himalayas. As a result, there’s no rainfall on the Lahaul side whereas the rest of the country receives rain.

Salient features of the Hampta Pass Trek

Variety of crossover scenery:

Hampta Pass trek begins with going via pine forests, birch, oak, and shrubs, loaded with maple trees. This alpine greenery gradually transforms into meadows streaming down valleys with different streams flowing side by side. In July, colorful wildflowers like sunflowers, blue lilies, and long pink flowers known as ‘distorts’ flourish here.

The Himalayan peaks and ranges:

Many beautiful peaks can be spotted on the Hampta Pass trek. The route gives you a closer glimpse of Mt. Indrasan, Mt. Deo Tibba, and Mt. Indrakila.

The Pir Panjal peak of the Lesser Himalayas protects the trekker’s route via the Kullu and Chandra valleys. The Dhauladhar, Mulkila, & Chandrabhaga mountains are also viewable from here.

The Chandratal Lake:

“Chandra” relates to the moon, and “tal” relates to a lake. The title of this elevated lake refers to its rounded shape, which reflects a sliver of the moon. Its crystal-clear blue tint varies throughout the day as the sun moves. This lake’s hidden water supply is unique for a lake at this height. At 4295 m, the Samudra Tapu highland surrounds the lake.

Hampta pass trek itinerary

DAY 1:

Jobra (2859 meters) is the starting point for the journey to Hampta. The 19 km ride from Manali (2050 meters) to Jobra includes 42 hard zigzag turns and beautiful views of the Kullu Valley as well as the Rani Nallah. The 2 km trek to Chika (3087 meters) campground starts in Jobra at the Allain Guhugal Hydel Plant junction & takes around 2 to 3 hours to finish. Camping overnight in the grasslands here will help in adaptation.

DAY 2:

This day’s trek is 6 km long. It now comes to a path of stones, which must be taken to traverse the river on feet to reach the other side. Because this water is so cold, travelers must start taking care to travel across it quickly and safely. Snow can be observed on rocks and stones all along the mountain as you enter the Jwara region in Uttarakhand. The campground at Balu ka Ghera (3782 meters) takes 5 hr to reach and offers a level area for sleeping in camps.

DAY 3:

Trekkers prepare themselves for miles of difficult elevation until they reach the peak. There are fewer sources of water now that the trek is situated above the river instead of alongside it. As a result, they must carry enough water for drinking for an 8 to 9-hour trip. From here, you can view the snow-covered Deo Tibba mountain (6001 meters) and Peak 5260. The steep descent to Shea Goru contrast with the trek to Hampta Pass (4287 meters) (3920 meters). In this scenario, tying ropes will be ideal. The trip will next bring the trekkers to Shea Goru through the plain Spiti Valley. The campground is again located on the river’s bank.

DAY 4:

The walk from Shea Goru begins with a gentle slope down to Hampta Valley, with Pir Panjal Peak slowly visible in the distance. It takes around 4 hr to go the 3 km to Chatru (3322 m). Trekkers can explore Chandratal at a 70 km distance, which takes roughly 3 hours by car, so start the day early to prevent having to shorten the trip short due to late evening. Lake Chandratal is 4295 m high.

DAY 5:

To return to Manali from Chatru through the high-altitude pass, trekkers must arrange a cab well in advance. Based on how long the visitors like to stay there at Rohtang Pass.

When visitors return to Manali, visitors can use the Bhuntar airport or Joginder Nagar Railway Station to connect to certain other destinations across the country. Another option is to hire a cab to Chandigarh and start your journey from there.
