History of Kunjapuri Temple
This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is considered to be one of the thirteen Shakti Peethas in the Shivalik range. It is believed to be one of the three peeths established by Jagadguru Shankaracharya in Tehri district. Of the two other Shakti Peethas in Tehri district, one is dedicated to Mata Surkanda Devi and one is dedicated to Mata Chandrabadni Devi. The Kunjapuri temple forms a holy triangle by joining these two peeths. It is believed that when Lord Shiva was carrying Mata Sati in his arms towards the Himalayas, some parts of the dead body of Mata Sati fell at this place. Mata Sati had taken Agni Samadhi in the Yagya Kund after hearing derogatory remarks about Lord Bholenath by Raja Daksha, the father of Mata Sati. When Lord Bholenath came to know that Mother Sati had died, Lord Bholenath went into mourning. Then Lord Bholenath started walking towards the Himalayas with the dead body of Mata Parvati, then after that to destroy or break the indifference of Lord Bholenath and to save the world, Lord Vishnu killed the dead body of Mata Sati being carried by Lord Bholenath. The body was cut with his Sudarshan Chakra. Due to which the body parts of Mata Sati fell on different Himalayan hills. Which were established at different places with different names.
